High potential and gifted education
Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.
At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.
What is high potential and gifted education?
High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
High potential and gifted education opportunities
There are four domains of potential. They are:
Creative – Natural abilities in imagination, invention, and originality.
Intellectual – Natural abilities in processing, understanding, reasoning, and the transfer of learning.
Physical – Natural abilities in muscular movement and motor control.
Social-emotional – Natural abilities in self-management and relating to and interacting with others.
Below are some of the opportunities in each of the domains that are provided to support our HPG students to thrive.

Extension, Enrichment or Extra-curricular
Activities to support high potential and gifted students fall into three categories, extension, enrichment and extra-curricular. Below is a description of each category.
Extension - typically seeks to increase the depth and challenge of learning within the same year context and can also include learning beyond that typically offered to students of a particular year group. Extension deepens and extends student knowledge, understanding, and skills. In that way, extension programs can be viewed as vertically engaging and challenging.
Enrichment - typically seeks to broaden the learning experience by applying learning to new and different contexts. These programs offer the opportunity for like-minded students to work together on challenging learning that may not be offered elsewhere in the regular school week. In this way, enrichment programs can be viewed as horizontally engaging and challenging.
Extra-curricular - typically seeks to support and augment core teaching and learning in the school and may offer extension and enrichment in specific activities such as debating, student leadership, sport, and technology programs.
At Greenwich Public School, we are committed to nurturing the talents, interests, and abilities of all students, including those with high potential. Supporting high potential and gifted learners is embedded in our everyday practice. Our teachers use evidence-based strategies to identify student needs and provide purposeful challenge that builds deep thinking, creativity, leadership, and ongoing growth.
We do this by:
- Adjusting content to include more complex, abstract or accelerated learning that stretches students’ understanding
- Varying learning processes through inquiry, problem-solving and independent tasks that promote higher-order thinking
- Modifying learning products so students can show what they know in ways that highlight their strengths and passions
- Creating flexible learning environments where students can work at an appropriate pace, collaborate with others and confidently take learning risks
- Encouraging student choice and authentic learning, ensuring students engage with meaningful tasks and have opportunities to direct aspects of their own learning
Our goal is to ensure every student is challenged, supported, and inspired, so their potential can flourish. If you would like further information about how we support high potential and gifted learners, please contact the school.
At Greenwich Public School, we are dedicated to nurturing each student’s unique talents by engaging them in a wide range of statewide competitions and activities. Some of the events and programs our students take part in include:
- Australian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiads (APSMO)
- NSW Environmental Education Centre HPGE Excursions
